Winston Graham is widely known for the series of historical novels Poldark, based in Cornwall. He also wrote thrillers such as Marnie which was made into a film and directed by Alfred Hitchcock in 1961. He wrote all of his books by hand - never using a typewriter or computer! Recognised for his contribution to writing, he was Chairman of the Society of Authors, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, and received an OBE in 1983.
