CERYS SCOREY

I explore the themes of time, habit, routine and disorder through my practice. By shifting my focus from the artwork itself to the creative process behind it, I’m able to document my relationship with time, how I navigate my thoughts, and if I consider myself to have failed or succeeded, in an honest and relatable way. While many of my projects are self-reflective, I intend for audiences to engage with my work by reflecting on their own individual habits and methods, both creatively and beyond.

As a deep thinker, the contexts of my projects are often controlled and considered, therefore I enjoy being able to hand over some of that control when it comes to choosing a medium to work with. I embrace forms of image making that are unpredictable, and what some would consider to be mistakes – a bleed from a broken pen, marks from a photocopier bed or a collage element that’s completely off scale – have become integral to maintaining my excitement for my practice. Location drawing stretches this idea further and allows me to observe and document people and environments where routine gives way to disorder and chaos. Beyond the decision of where to go and what to document, my actions have to be instinctive and in the moment. The combination of lighting, people, traffic, or wildlife passing through, what I happen to have in my pencil case, and how much time I have on my hands come together to make an image that can only be created in those exact conditions at that exact time.
