EL WOOD

I am a recent Photography graduate from Kingston University. My work has an obvious focus on fashion, however, despite the subject, my process remains the same in creating compositionally strong and vibrant images.

My photographic style lies between the glossy fashion campaigns seen in magazines such as ‘Vogue’ and ‘Harper’s Bazaar,’ to the more dark and edgy imagery seen in contemporary magazines such as ‘Wonderland’ and ‘Dazed and Confused.’ However stylistically diverse these magazines are, the professional quality and aesthetic themes remain a constant reminder for my own practice. In the discovery of my current photographic style, fashion photographers such as Tim Walker and Guy Bourdin initially sparked my interest in composition and colour. With Walker’s immersive eccentric scenes and Bourdin’s colour-rich cropped framing, I formed a personal style as a consequence of these influences.

I am predominantly inspired by people I come across from day to day and online. My ideas form around a character or location I have seen before or imagined from literature. Whether influenced by reality or fiction, these visual references allow my concepts to take shape with the outcome primarily as fashion editorials.

This fascination with humanity is combined with fashion photography in my most recent project which looks at gender ambiguity and fashion. Whilst the subject may change in the future, my work centres around the process and outcome. The digital age has reformed photography to be almost effortless, however, I look to bring value to my work through a meticulous process, visual diversity and contemporary inspiration.
