FAITH MCKIE

Material and process are intrinsic elements to my practice that ultimately lead the act of making. I aim to create a dialogue between my role as the artist, my hands that mould and the clay that I sculpt. Employing a multitude of processes, existing artwork is reimagined into new formats in an attempt to explore and challenge the themes of the original, copy and replica. Fluctuating between 2D and 3D my artwork can connect the extensive history of ceramics with contemporary digital image and 3D print.

Always beginning with a small lump of clay, I build, squeeze and manipulate material with my hands - repeating this process until a form naturally appears. I force the clay to create shapes as it bends and collapses in on itself. Each work carries traceable fingerprints, nail marks and scratches that act as a memory of my original intervention with the material. Its resulting form creates an overwhelming desire that tempts the viewer to touch and hold the artwork and in doing so the works recall the memory of its making and the artist’s presence. Remaining unfired and in its raw state, the clay holds a potential to be reused and enter the process of making once again.

My practice functions as a link between historic tactile materials and modern technology as well as emphasising the relationship between the artist and the artwork. The significance of my hands and material is later substituted by digital image and technology to replicate the original and generate discourse between the handmade and the mechanical reproduction.
