KATHRYN WILKINSON-FELLER

Throughout my practise I find I am often reacting and responding to the natural world around me, letting my subconscious direct my design process. The language of my work is tactile, and textile driven, shaped by the senses, especially touch. Having grown up on the coast of Suffolk, the unpredictable movements and energy of the elements is what primarily inspires my creativity. My designs are organic, natural, and raw, reflecting the rugged coastline of Suffolk. Using found natural objects, I print and dye in an attempt to capture this natural energy. It is these surface textures that come first in my design process, which then greatly informs my silhouettes and garment construction. The fluidity and randomness of the textures create a spontaneity of movement which adds energy to the structured and simple silhouettes of my design work.

I find I constantly reflect on my role as a woman and have undertaken an in-depth observation of self.  Heightened by my participation as a high-level rower, I have experienced first-hand the perception of the female body in sport and how this contrasts with perceived notions of femininity. Within my work I am trying to express this inner turmoil and ideological conflict of trying to conceal, reveal, but also accept and celebrate the body.
