MATTHEW MADDEN

Hi, I'm Matt. 

Since age 7 I've loved nothing more than spending time in the workshops, drafting, making and creating. This year I'll be graduating my Masters Course in Sustainable Design, marking the end of 15 years of design education. My main skills include research, model making, 3D modelling, digital skills and photography. 

My time at Kingston University has been characterised by projects such as:

KSS 2040, a speculative design piece imagining the future of the university in the face of climate change, critiquing present 'solutions' to the sustainability crisis by juxtaposing them into a worst case scenario. The outcomes include a reworked web page for the university, products such as a university hazmat suit, a keep-cup style pollution mask, and a fake news timeline documenting how the world went from the present day to the imagined future. 

Reclaiming Recovery, which looked at local, crafts based approaches to supporting stroke survivors. The outcome was a hand-made wooden mirror therapy unit made from recovered materials, intended to inspire the family members of patients to take an active role in supporting recovery. The mirror box unit cost significantly less than mass produced alternatives and can be tailored to the specific needs of the individual in question. 

Monopoly21, which reworked the rules of Monopoly to teach players about alternative economic models. The new rules include democracy cards by which players can vote to nationalise the rail ways and utilities, scaleable income taxes, charitable organisations and a universal basic income. 

I received my Bachelors at Falmouth University where worked on projects including designing sensory toys for children living with PMLD, hemp based packaging design solutions for the US based company Sana Packaging, and 3D scanning and modelling work for sculptor Kinsley Byrne.
