Arnold Wesker was a widely known and greatly respected dramatist. A prolific author of 50 plays, four volumes of short stories, two volumes of essays, much journalism and a book on the subject, a children's book, some poetry, and other assorted writings.
You can't change people, he say, you can only give them some love and hope they'll take it.
Notable works include The Kitchen, written in 1957 and later made into a film in 1961, Roots, Chips with Everything, The Merchant, Chicken Soup with Barley and The Rocking Horse which was commissioned by the BBC World Service in 2008.
His plays have been translated into over 20 languages and performed around the world. Wesker also co-founded the Writers & Readers Publishing Cooperative Ltd. with a group of writers in 1974.
You are not a good writer because you come from a working class background and you're not a good writer because you have been through university. You're a good writer because you're a good writer and it's the work that matters, not the labels that surround you.
He received numerous awards and accolades throughout his career including the Goldie Award in 1987, the Last Frontier Lifetime Achievement Award in 1999 for his distinguished service to theatre and a knighthood in 2006.
