Elisabeth Lutyens CBE was the daughter of architect Sir Edwin Lutyens. From the age of 9 she began to aspire to be a composer. She studied at the Royal College of Music in London and later in Paris.
She was the first female composer to score a feature film and relished being referred to as the Queen of Horror, having worked heavily in the genre for both Hammer and Amicus productions on films such as: The Skull (1965), Dr. Terror's House of Horrors (1965), The Earth Dies Screaming (1964) and the Terrornauts (1967). She was very a productive creative and would often quip Do you want it good, or do you want it Wednesday.
Described as Sensuously beautiful, her style featured a strong percussive element and sparse spacial textures. In 1969 she received a very well deserved CBE for her significant contribution, in a time when female composers were not widely recognized.
