Jean Muir CBE, was an iconic fashion designer whose designs demonstrated the easy fit and pared down understatement that became her signature design.
I do not do young, kooky fashions – I design clothes which I hope any British woman would be happy to wear.
Muir's designs were aimed towards the woman with a mature outlook, regardless of age. She avoided creating clothes for fantasy figures, but focused on modern, restrained elegance.
Only when you really know your industry, really know your trade, can you then make it into what is your own kind of art…
The craft with which she prepared, designed and created garments was clearly of paramount importance to her – and it shows in every stitch.
Proper attention to dress, is a sign of self-respect and respect for the order of things. I have always enjoyed working out a very geometric or architectural shape and then ‘dropping’ it into jersey, where it immediately relaxes – is supple and giving – is human and moveable.
