Nicky Haslam

Nicky Haslam’s greatest legacy is his undeniable talent and influence as Britain’s ultimate interior designer. In his spare time he is also known as a socialite, artist, cabaret singer, book reviewer, art editor, memoirist and literary editor and he features on both Vanity Fair and GQ’s best-dressed lists. Since December 2010, Nicky Haslam has been blogging for The Telegraph.

In the late 1980’s Haslam founded his London-based architectural and design firm, NH Design. The firm is established as one of the most important luxury interior design offices in the United Kingdom, known for high-end design, bespoke furnishings and a style that is ever changing with the times, yet always distinguishable for its humour, charm and wit.

Under his guidance, his creative team combines a unique sense of history with a modern contemporary outlook and the firm works on projects all over the globe including the English countryside and London, New York, Morocco, New Orleans, Denmark, Montreal, Barbados, St Jean Cap Ferrat, Monaco and Moscow, Klosters, Grasse, Mallorca, Los Angeles and Paris.

You can learn the subtle language of interior style, but many people simply buy it. If you put yourself in the hands of someone who knows what they are doing, you can be confident it will look good.
Often it's a lack of time, not taste, that leads someone to hire a decorator. A good decorator/client relationship should be like a marriage. The time one puts in needs to be extensive. One needs to listen to them and understand what they like and how they live.

NH Design has created select offices, restaurants, retail environments and residences for high profile and celebrity clientele including names like Mick Jagger, Bryan Ferry, Rod Stewart, Ringo Starr, Charles Saatchi and Rupert Everett.

I tend to look out for things with a resonance to my youth - artists or objects that seemed romantic all those years ago. I never buy anything purely for its value. I like possessions that smile back at me.
I believe every room speaks, tells you what to do to it. You have to listen to that.

His opinion and expertise as a creative writer are consistently sought for publications including: American and British Vogue, Show Magazine – a forerunner to Vanity Fair, Harper’s Bazaar, The London Evening Standard Magazine, Sunday Telegraph Magazine, The World of Interiors, The Spectator and Tatler. Specifically, Haslam has been a guest editor for Vogue and Tatler.

With a fabric line and national as well as international design projects on the table, Haslam is continuing the tradition built over the past 38 years at NH Design, inspiring designers to follow their blazing trail in the international design arena.

In 2013 he released an album celebrating his singing and memories with his friends Helena Bonham Carter, Tracey Emin, Amanda Eliasch, Bob Geldof, Bryan Ferry and Mick Jagger; called Midnight Matinee, it was produced by his friend David Ogilvy.

Sometimes I think it would be nice to share everything I've got with somebody - and sometimes I think I'm very lucky to have the bathroom to myself. But I feel it would be nice to pass on my knowledge. Perhaps because I haven't got children - one wants to educate somebody.
