Trevor Baylis, CBE

Born on this day, Trevor Baylis was a serial inventor, best known for creating the wind-up radio. His radio, instead of relying on batteries or external electrical source, is powered by the user manually winding a crank.

A good idea turns every cog in your mind, making you scared of bed in case the whole machine grinds to a halt.

He was dedicated to helping inventors develop and protect their ideas and find a routes to market.

I'd work eighteen-hour stretches and fall asleep in my clothes. Then I'd wake up in the middle of the night, brew a pot of tea, and start work again. I was tired, but work had become pure enjoyment.

In addition to the CBE he received in 2015, he was also awarded an OBE in 1997 and 11 honorary degrees from UK universities.
