Thesis Project .

Mistley new marine biology institute

The project intends to support the retention, preservation and re-production of marine life through education. The site is located in a marine protected zone, which makes it an appropriate location for this field of study.

The master plan is comprised of an assembly of seven individual campus buildings, comprising of learning facilities and student accommodation, all closely linked to evoke a sense of community. The birdwatch tower hopes to attract a significant number of locals, including those who already interested in bird observation. The site and its particular character and broad, estuarine mud-flat land-scape set this thinking strongly in motion.

The buildings are sympathetic to Mistley’s historical context while maintaining a contemporary and sustainable approach in their design. The main cluster of buildings are raised on a soil plinth reclaimed from the excavation. Hard and soft landscaped areas situated-on top and adjacent that serve the student population while aiming to reconnect and link the new campus with Mistley along its working waterfront.

The purpose of the plinth is to protect the campus buildings against anticipated raise in future water levels. As a sustain-able approach, The proposed cladding material is locally sourced timber which undergoes a charring process. The materials can be recycled or repurposed. The design roofscape and the timber material used in the structure reflects the traditional buildings in the rural context.
