Statement:

I am a scavenger, digger and collector. An artist, environmentalist and imperfectionist. I thrive foraging in bins and bushes for the perfect piece of plastic or dainty dead flower.

Filtering mud from where I grew up in Devon into clay has proven central to my work, representing a grounding in my past and acting as a vehicle for a more political comment on consumerism through its stark rawness. In aesthetic contrast, waste synthetics contextualise the idealised ‘nature’ with the realised ‘trash’, taking on philosopher Slavoj Žižek’s stance that the true environmentalist loves trash.

My work reflects an age where ‘nature’ is set apart from society, when, in actuality, the two exist in a mesh, connected by social, political and economic relations; it is TJ Demos’ post-natural condition. This organic/synthetic, nature/culture riff is where my work wallows, toying with the material cycles which represent these supposedly separate entities. The materials I use are the lowest in Aristotle’s hylomorphic model, yet today, these materials are glorified due to their needed ability to incite civic responsibility in tackling the climate crisis. There is a new, eco-materialistic space which is now put on a pedestal. Inhabiting this space helps process the global existentialism of the climate crisis. I consider how materials leave their mark on the planet, and, like stone circles, mysteriously outlive us and incite wonder for generations to come.
