HOLLY BASTABLE

My work questions dimensionality by exploring the relationship between space and surface through processed-oriented works. By choreographing video and object together into architecturally sensitive installations, I expand on the notion of ‘image’ into a structural and spatial medium via projection. I synthesise this process through the aesthetics of the ‘industrial’, forming this visual thread between the materials and the media. Above all, I focus on developing a dedicated degree of compositional harmony through this idea of pictorial space.

I take the mundane, unassuming materials such as factory packaging, cardboard and machine waste to escalate the visual importance of industrial packaging that become immaterial. Through my observation of adhesive-tape manufactures’ assembly-lines, I have taken chorographical inspirations from the travels of block colour bands being fed through machinery and using this as a formula to sculpt simple, directional movement. I constantly exercise the state of doing and undoing; unmaking and remaking; temporary and static because of the continual rotation of the objects in each work. I therefore find myself creating through exploring and asking questions, rather than to find answers.

By using film and photography as a transportable and archival device, my temporary system could exist in a carefully designed physical form. ‘Artist’ as ‘Choreographer’ has been a vital part to this process, as the viewer only experiences my work through these recordings. By choreographing the viewpoints, I design the focus and distil the most aesthetical fragments of time to achieve the elevation of these objects. My practice situates itself in the theory of ‘Artist’ as ‘Director’ and visual ‘controller’, to heighten the viewer’s awareness of how objects are positioned in relation to visual hierarchy.
