Died on this day, Lord Byron (George Gordon Byron) was a Romantic poet and satirist whose poetry and personality captured the imagination of Europe. Often described as the most flamboyant and notorious of the Romantics. He left England in 1816 and never returned.
He was described by one of his lovers as mad, bad, and dangerous to know.
Renowned as the gloomy egoist of his autobiographical poem Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage (1812–18) in the 19th century, he is now more widely known for the satiric realism of his magnus opus Don Juan (1819–24). Other key works include, Childe Harold's Pilgrimage (1812), The Corsair (1814), The Prisoner of Chillon (1816), Prometheus (1816), Heaven and Earth (1821) and The Island (1823).
