Siouxsie Sioux

Siouxsie Sioux, is a singer, songwriter, musician and producer. Best known for being a founder member of Siouxsie and the Banshees and the Creatures, she has also had success as a solo musician.

Over the years she has been given many labels; the first lady of punk, the godmother of goth and the ice queen. But she has also been a huge motivational force for generations of women. Viv Albertine from the Slits had this to say…

Siouxsie just appeared fully made, fully in control, utterly confident. It blew me away. There she was doing something that I had dared to dream, but she took it and did it.

Siouxsie took centre stage at a time in the mid 70s when the world and Britain particularly was a very different place.

People forget that the punk thing was really good for women. It motivated them to pick up a guitar rather than be a chanteuse. It allowed us to be aggressive. Punk was the first thing to be unisex, and that kind of followed on from the androgyny of Bowie, but taking it further.

The influence and impact of her music and singing style have been widely acknowledged, by bands including: U2, Joy Division, Morrisey, Dave Gahan, Robert Smith, Everything But the Girl, The Cocteau Twins, Ana Matronic, Courtney Love, FKA Twigs and many, many more.

I was never attracted to being a proficient singer or player. I suppose I was interested in creating a vision; in the same way I was drawn to the tension within cinema.

Siouxsie and the Banshees developed in a time when artists were encouraged to experiment, to try new things, have the freedom to fail, to be creative, individual, and their legacy is testament to this.

I hate the industry even more now, no bands get nurtured anymore. Labels only spend money promoting acts they know will be Top Ten. I find it offensive spending $2million on a video.
