Sir Sean Connery

Born on this day (1930), Sir Sean Connery is best known for his portrayal of James Bond 007, in the early Bond movies adapted from creator Ian Fleming's books. His portrayal set the mould for how 007 should be played and for many he is the quintessential Bond.

Connery has appeared in over 70 films during a career which spanned nearly 6 decades. He played 007 in 7 movies: Dr. No (1962), From Russia with Love (1963), Goldfinger (1964), Thunderball (1965), You Only Live Twice (1967), Diamonds Are Forever (1971), Never Say Never Again (1983).

People used to call me Bond in the street. It was impossible to avoid crowds of people all over the place and blinding flashguns. The Beatles had to run the gauntlet as well, but at least there were four of them.

Connery played many characters during his long and highly successful career, appearing in films across every genre, from historic, fantasy, thriller, romance and sci-fi to the classics... Hell Drivers (1957), Macbeth (1961), Marnie (1964), The Hill (1965), The Red Tent (1969), Zardoz (1974), Murder on the Orient Express (1974), The Man Who Would Be King (1975), The First Great Train Robbery (1979), Outland (1981), Time Bandits (1981), Highlander (1986), The Name of the Rose (1986), The Untouchables (1987), Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989), The Hunt for Red October (1990), Medicine Man (1992), Rising Sun (1993), First Knight (1995), Dragonheart (1996), The Rock (1996), The Avengers (1998), Entrapment (1999), The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (2003) and Sir Billi (2012).

When I took a taxi during a recent Edinburgh Film Festival (2009), the driver was amazed that I could put a name to every street we passed. "How come?" he asked. "As a boy I used to deliver milk round here," I said. "So what do you do now?" That was rather harder to answer.

Connery was knighted by the Queen at an investiture ceremony at Holyrood Palace in Edinburgh on 5 July 2000 for services to film and drama.
