SONAKSHI BABEL

A way of self-exploration - that is what fashion has always been for me. I am Sonakshi Babel a graduate in Fashion and Design department of the Indian Institute of Art and Design, New Delhi. Fashion has never been a subject or just a career I wanted to choose, it always has been something more like a therapy to me. One which helped me discover a bit of me that I had never thought existed inside me. I have seen myself grow inside-out in various ways in this small tenure of 4 years.

Nature and Architecture have always been a major source of inspiration for me, which I further try and translate in terms of fashion. As a Designer, functional details are something that always catches my attention, which is further brought forward in my work with the help of pattern and design manipulation and designing utilitarian elements which aim at providing a personalised while engaging experience to the wearer.

For my major's project, I was inspired by the vernacular architecture of Labriya, a small village in Central India (also my grandmother's town). The houses in the town have a very strong connection between the people, their occupation and their ways of living. Every house has details which are unique in itself and make the house self-sufficient in every possible way. Inspired by the elements and the elements a fashion collection of utilitarian ready to wear garment has been designed.
