I make contemporary paper artworks, working primarily with paper embellished with embroidery to create imaginary, abstract landscapes, sculptural wall pieces and handmade paper vessels. Using hand-coloured papers and thin thread, dense lines of stitch are overlaid like paint to build up depths of colour.
Inspired by the sky, particularly at dawn and dusk, I try to capture the atmosphere of fleeting moments in time, reflecting the constantly changing light and trying to depict the essence of something that is caught in an instant yet, remains elusive and ever-changing.
More recent work is based on the myth of Persephone and uses natural plant dyes and sustainable plant papers.
I am a member of the Society of Designer Craftsmen, the International Association of Papermakers and Artists (IAPMA), an associate member of Art Space in Portsmouth and my work is included on the Crafts Council Directory.
My work has been exhibited throughout the UK and Europe and most recently in paper exhibitions in Shanghai, China, Toyota, Japan and Bankside Gallery, London. My work has twice won First Prize for Mixed Media at the Beverly Hills Art Show in the USA, been shortlisted for the Henry Foyle Award for Stitched Textiles and ‘Highly Commended’ in Portsmouth and Worthing Open Art Competitions. This year I have been awarded Third Place in Paperworks 2023 an International Competition at b.j.spoke gallery, Huntington, New York.
I regularly visit groups and Embroiderers’ Guilds giving talks, demonstrations and workshops and also one to one or small group tuition.
